Cebu Press Freedom Week: In Praise of Cebu Media

We are Cyberwriters, as what Luis A. Quibranza III of Sun.Star described Bloggers yesterday in his Lifestyle column, and I definitely agree with that but I admit, I am a Major Major frustrated writer. But Freedom of expression chooses no grammar check, no gender, no professions, and no social status as long as you express something which is expressible and you step nobody at the end.

Today is the third day of Cebu’s celebration for the 16th Press Freedom Week which started last Sunday, September 19 and will conclude on Saturday, September 25. What is the importance of this event then? If I am to answer, it is very important for we are celebrating the freedom that Cebu Print and Broadcast Media are having and because of that we are benefited in some other ways:

We are informed.

We are educated.

We are entertained.

We are guided.

We are uplifted personally, morally, socially and spiritually.

And most especially, we are updated.

Personally, I put on my knee and take a bow to all Cebu Press personnel from Photographer, Cameraman, Writer, News Caster/Anchor, Field Reporter and others. Truly, you deserve to be praised for your Profession is a no joke.

And for this era, wired Period, the so called Cyberwriters have no intention to overpower or take-over the Press’s responsibility. We are here to help broadcast the information and somehow, spread the news online. We are just an alternative source, you are the mainstream.

Kudos to Cebu Press!

No Approved Therapeutic Claims, a clearer view

When this tag line is showed in television, my youngest brother used to ask me, “Unsay boot pasabot ana kuya? Dili na tambal?” (What does it mean brother? Isn’t it a medicine?) But as usual, I ignored the question and instead I answered just to shift topic, “Ayaw pagsige tan-aw TV, pagtoon na diha” (Do not keep on watching Television, it’s time to study)

Sample food supplement with the No Approved Therapeutic Claim tag line

Basically, what does it mean when we say “No Approved Therapeutic Claims”? We can actually see this label on many medicines or other related products like food, herbal and dietary supplements and the like. Sometimes, this tag line is showed and can he hear in Television and the radio most especially in the specified product commercial. We, viewers and product consumers, definitely disregarded this information and continue on taking in to our system. But what does this message tells us? Here is my word for word translation and understanding on the said statement:

Therapeutic” means any medicine or therapy that cures disease or relieve pain while “Claim” means an assertion that something is true or factual. Going back to the said statement, No Approved Therapeutic Claims, obviously means that the product has no factual affirmations and has no proven evidences that it can cure disease, illness or relieve pain.

And now we have the layman’s point of view and understanding of this line, what can an ordinary consumer or individual do about this stuff? Recently, there is a revision of this unnoticed line. From the traditional “no approved therapeutics claim“, it is now replaced with “Important notice: The product is not medicine and is not to be used for treating diseases.” Translated into Filipino: “Mahalagang paalaala: Ang (name of product) ay hindi dapat gamiting panggamot sa anumang uri ng sakit.” Thanks to our Secretary of Department of Health on this move, at least Filipino families who are member of the poverty line do understand and will now take consideration of this reminder. To note that Filipinos spend P150 billion on health supplements and half of that amount is spent on products with no proven curative effects, so in the first place, we should not spend billion just for this medicines and the like.

But the challenge of this move is not yet done for it was observed lately by many users; marketers target the online community with the same marketing strategy of selling food supplements and or medicines. A good example of marketing tool online is Facebook, which in recent news is dubbed to be the third largest country if the said online social community is accounted as country. Lots of users and potential consumers logged in to Facebook daily and if they do not take into consideration the “important notice” rule, and then I bet there is no sense of changing the reminder into a more understandable version. We should be extra cautious next time.

Fun Starts at School, My Idea of Fun

What is your IDEA of FUN? A question that entails a meaningful story

When I was in grade school, our teacher told us a story about this teenager and it started with a line “I’m happy, I am now 10 and 5…”. After that, she asked us, how old is the main character of the story, and some of us answered 10 while others said 5, but it’s actually 15. A group of my classmates amazed and asked how come they didn’t notice it. But for me, I had hard time thinking how old really is the character…this phase of guessing and thinking is a delight. Since grade school, I am treating education and schooling as enjoyable pages of a person’s life.  And until now, it is a great FUN and it never fails me to get excited when the season of “papers and pen” comes.
But FUN is not just to go and be happy with some useless stuff. My idea of Fun is to accomplish this F.U.N formula that I believe in and will contribute a lot in our life’s endeavor and struggle.

Finalize your Education
This is my first and foremost priority, not just for my own good but for my life’s satisfaction and success. Success in the way that I would accomplish all my needs and obtain my greatest FUN in life, boosted Career and well-built future family.  The best way to obtain this is to finalize and to take a good education.  I bet everybody knows about it and hope to treat this as part of their FUN life.

On June 16, my 4th year and last year of schooling will start. I’ve been studying for two years already in Cebu Institute of Technology where I always do a FUN learning. Because I enjoyed schooling, I am now ready for the school opening and hopefully, I will spend my FUN school time throughout the semester with ease and smile.

Utilize the Knowledge
How useless would it be, if a person spent many years for good education and in the end, will just sit back and assumed nothing happens?  We must use our earned knowledge. This is our tool outside, in the real world, in the battlefield — this is our shield and with this, we will be successful and the ultimate FUN will be accomplished.

Above is a picture taken from Cebu Bloggers Society’s Bloggers Social Responsibility (BSR). Our Co-CBS member, Melith taught high school students about computer basics. This is how CBS utilizes its knowledge, a great way of sharing the FUN.

Negate the Unnecessary
In my own dictionary, to negate means to eradicate. Thus, we must eradicate the unnecessary things and happenings in our life in order to obtain the much awaited FUN. How to eradicate those? Well, very simple, focus on the bright side of life, work with it, expand and give it a heavy value to your life, enjoy with it, love it, experience with it and lastly, make FUN with it  —  Just focus and be optimistic.

Remember, Unnecessary is synonymous to unneeded; obviously means, those things which are unnecessary are not needed in our life. Live life to the fullest and focus on the good things around you.

At first people assumed that Gabii sa Kabilin event here in Cebu was a tiresome activity but as the event went on, we, CBS participants felt at ease and had enjoyed the culture and traditions that Cebu has. LEFT: A shot from the Gabii sa Kabilin Event.

FUN doesn’t always mean activities that are enjoyable or amusing. Sometimes, we ignore those people, events or activities in our life which at first, we treat them as hassle bugs. But if we just swim and explore deeply on them, then we will find out that real FUN is there waiting for our embrace. This is how I formulized my idea of Fun, Finalize your Education + Utilize the Knowledge + Negate the Unnecessary = ultimate FUN. How about you?
