EUTS: everything under the sun

All Stories Revealed Under The Sun

Friday the 13th, what is it all about?

Yesterday, i clicked on the time display in the computer just below and right portion of the monitor and found out that it was february 11, and then i started counting until feb 21 (coz i have a special meeting on this day, CBS meeting) but i fall on feb 13—–friday! and then my officemates talked with horrific voice, “hmmm, my neighbor’s baby will be baptized this friday, i thought it was a bad luck day?”

It stunned me for a while and thought, wow with this time, year 2009, there are still people who are superstitious and i admit i am also one of them but not so often and in other way but with the friday the 13th.. hmmm..!

Actually, this belief rooted from Ancient Times. As confirmed from Dossey, a folklore historian and author of Holiday Folklore, Phobias and Fun, said that there are two unlucky factors that when combined is believed to make a one super unlucky day, and those are number 13 and the day Friday.

She then traced that the fear of number thirteen which is called paraskavedekatriaphobia or commonly known as friggatriskaidekaphobia came from a Norse Myth about 12 GODS having a dinner party at VALHALLA, their heaven. And then came the uninvited 13th guest, the wicked Loki. Loki arranged for Hoder, the blind God of Darkness, to shoot Balder the beautiful, the God of Joy and Gladness, with a mistletoe-tipped arrow.

Then, Balder died and the whole earth got dark. It was a bad day since all people and Gods are mourning for Balder’s death. From that time, the fear and phobia to number 13 and Friday began.

Balder lies on the floor, died

Basing on that story, many people believe and as a matter of fact it was estimated that 800-900 US dollars is lost in business on that day and that would be tomorrow, February 13, 2009 and take note, next month, March, there is still a Friday the 13th and it will occur again by November of this year, there is also a Friday the 13th day.

So, i think if people will take good care of themselves and be aware of some possible danger, i believe you will be safe and free from any bad lucks or the like. But what i am shouting for on that specific day is that, Thanks GOD Its Flyday—i mean FRIDAY!
